Hypersomnia is a neurological disorder that describes excessive sleepiness with impaired alertness.

This impaired alertness impacts the quality of life a person may have. The lack of attention to the signs and symptoms of hypersomnia can cause injury.


A few causes of hypersomnia include sleep apnea, irregular sleep habits or limited exposure to light during the day. Having hypersomnia could prevent a person from working, completing daily activities as well as driving. A few of the symptoms are restlessness, low energy, memory loss, loss of appetite, and/or anxiety.
