Narcolepsy is uncontrollable daytime sleepiness that affects the nervous system. A person may suddenly fall asleep if they are in a relaxing environment, regardless of what is happening around them; even while sitting at a stop sign.

There are different types of this chronic disease. Narcolepsy type one involves cataplexy. Cataplexy is a sudden loss of muscle tone that could make your body totally collapse. Intense emotions like fear, excitement or laughing can bring on cataplexy. Narcolepsy type two which does not involve cataplexy.

  • Both types of narcolepsies include an uncontrollable need to sleep

  • Without sleepiness, narcolepsy is not the proper diagnosis
